My Maths Cloud
My Maths Cloud is an online maths tutoring platform where students subscribe to access more than 30,000 documents, worked solutions and textbooks. 2B Creative took the platform over from previous developers when it was slow, timing out and drawing complaints from students. We tracked down the causes and put error monitoring in place so we no longer had to wait for students to report problems. With the site on a steadier footing, we built a better document search and then a question bank that students pay for as an additional subscription tier.

The challenge
The tutor who runs My Maths Cloud was unhappy with the progress and quality of the work from previous developers.
Pages loaded slowly, requests timed out and bugs appeared across the site. Students paying for access were reporting errors, and the only way to investigate was to pass each complaint to a developer to look into by hand.
Search was basic too. With more than 30,000 documents in the library and a dated site structure, students often had to dig around to find what they needed.
Our approach
We kept the existing Gatsby front end and Dato content management system and improved them in stages while students carried on using the site.
Profiling showed us where pages were slowing down, so we cut back excessive GraphQL data fetching and optimised images and video.
Sentry now records errors, traces their cause and replays the user's session, so we work from a live list of issues.
Typesense, a low-cost open-source search engine, indexes PDF content, question numbers and categories. The question bank builds on that index and turns the questions a student picks into a printable PDF worksheet.
