Victorian Athletic League
The Victorian Athletic League runs professional footracing across Victoria and beyond, a tradition that goes back well over a century. Its events range from 70 to 3200 metres, and the best known is the Stawell Gift, run every year since 1878. Coordinating a full season of meets, and the athletes who enter them, takes a lot of organising. The VAL came to 2B to bring that online in one place: a platform where athletes can find races, enter them, manage their membership and stay up to date, and where the League can run the season behind the scenes.

We built the platform as a Next.js application, which lets us serve fast, well-structured pages while keeping room for the interactive parts athletes use most. The centre of it is the athlete portal. From there, a runner can see the scheduled races, sign up for the ones they want to enter, book their place and manage their membership, all from a single account.
That matters because the League covers a busy calendar of meets. The 2026/27 season has 25 events across Victoria and New South Wales. Behind the portal, the platform gives organisers the tools to schedule those races and manage entries, so the work of running a season is handled in one system rather than spread across spreadsheets and email. The aim throughout was a site that's straightforward for a first-time entrant and dependable for the people running the events.
Signing up for a race is only useful if you remember when it is. To handle that, we built notifications and race reminders using the Twilio API, which lets the platform send messages to athletes directly rather than relying on them to check the site.
Race reminders go out ahead of scheduled events, so runners know when and where they're competing without having to log in and look it up. Tying this into the same system that handles sign-ups and scheduling means the reminders reflect what's actually booked, and an athlete's entries, membership and messages all sit together in one account. For a League with runners entering events across the state and interstate, that kind of reliable, timely communication takes real pressure off the office and helps athletes turn up ready to race.
